Origin

[edit]

This programme was originally Cbeebes but it is a British-American programme?Halbared (talk) 22:57, 1 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

The franchise is American owned now, it was British in origin. Does 'American' belong in the info box as 'origin?'Halbared (talk) 14:28, 5 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Request for a franchise article

[edit]

As two shows about Bob, I think it makes sense if there's a article called Bob the Builder (franchise). Thomasfan1000 (talk) 16:29, 26 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Cosgrove Hall Films involved in the show?

[edit]

I discovered that the category "Television series by Cosgrove Hall Films" is seen below but Cosgrove Hall Films wasn't involved in this show it was made by HOT Animation so that category which is "Television series by Cosgrove Hall Films" has to be removed. 213.107.48.144 (talk) 09:19, 28 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

US wording needs to be changed

[edit]

Hello - would someone with editing access change the following '7 October 2020 through 28 February 202.' This because in such a context 'through' is a US style and is never used in the UK, or elsewhere. More appropriate would be '7 October 2020 to 28 February 2021' ... of if not 'to' then 'until'. Thank you. 2003:D3:FF1E:C54A:84EB:9F97:341:55F3 (talk) 17:23, 26 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Similarly 'An animated theatrical movie' needs to be changed to 'An animated film'. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2003:D3:FF1E:C54A:84EB:9F97:341:55F3 (talk) 17:25, 26 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Five Fingers

[edit]

The BBC has fallen for some urban legend. As you can see on the official Internet site of TV Tokyo: https://www.tv-tokyo.co.jp/anime/norisuta/bob/index.html Same goes for other characters like Mickey Mouse. They all do have four fingers in Japan, not five. Here is a Japanese living in Germany who talks about it: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/iTupPDXhNqo Mijarena (talk) 10:50, 4 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Five fingers in Japanese version

[edit]

This Wikipedia article makes it seem like the episodes were altered for the Japanese release:

When being exported to Japan, it was reported that characters of Bob the Builder would be doctored to have five fingers instead of the original four. This was because of a practice among yakuza gangs, where members would "cut off their little fingers as a sign they can be trusted and have strength of character, and will stay through.

If you watch an episode, you can see this is false. The source clarifies that this is just for merchandise: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/entertainment/720419.stm — Preceding unsigned comment added by (talkcontribs) 05:30, 26 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for bringing this up again. I think the BBC article is just wrong, as pointed out in the 2024 thread #Five Fingers above.
  • One claim in the BBC article is clearly incorrect: "the Yakuza cut off their little fingers as a sign they can be trusted and have strength of character". That's just wrong. Yes, some Yakuza have parts of their little fingers cut off, but as punishment or atonement, not as a sign of strength. See Yubitsume. If the authors of the article got that wrong, maybe they were also sloppy with other details.
  • The BBC article is a bit unclear. It says "Bob's creators ... have also decided to give all merchandising of four-fingered Bob an extra digit". But what does "also" mean here? What else did they decide? The article doesn't tell us.
  • It's very unlikely that the producers would re-shoot basically the entire show just for the Japanese market. That's what they'd have to do to change the number of fingers. It would be a huge effort even in animation, and much more so in claymation.
  • The Japanese Wikipedia article about the series doesn't mention fingers. If the claim were correct and the number of fingers had actually been changed, that interesting fact would likely be mentioned.
  • A search on Amazon Japan for the series brings up lots of DVD covers. As far as I can tell, Bob and other figures have four fingers on all of them.
In conclusion: The BBC article is very likely wrong. I'll delete the claim. It would be great to have a reliable source that refutes the BBC claim, but for the time being, we should just remove it.
Timeline of the claim in this article:
