"There appears to be general agreement in historical records and family genealogy that Hill Brahmins (both Purbia and Kumai Bahuns) migrated from the Gangetic Plains to the western Himalayas then from there to the eastern Himalayas including Nepal. Nepali historians have claimed that Hill Brahmins entered the Himalayan region from Kannauj.[14] According to Acharya Bamsavali, Bahuns have migrated from Kanyakubja to Jumla in Nepal."

"Bahuns alongwith Chhetris were original inhabitants of Far Western and Karnali region of Nepal. They were called Khasas. They used to perform pre Vedic form of worship called Masto Worship.
Bahun is one of the caste in khas community and their origins are from the Himalayan belt of South Asia. Originating from modern day Central Asia, the Khas people are said to have migrated from their ancestral land towards the Himalayan region of Nepal in ancient times. The modern day Khas include Chhetri, Bahun, Kami, Thakuri, Sarki, Sannyasi, Badi, Damai, Gaine and others. According to the historians, the period of their migration remains ambiguous and stretches back to the pre-christ era. In Nepal, the Khas people first settled around present day Karnali region (West Nepal).
Khas Bahun Origin and their surname history:
Bahun are pure khas people who worship the god called masto and they have the origin of west nepal.
The titles derived from government ranks are Hakim, Karki, Revenue Officer, Bhatta, Raj Purohit or Dharmadhikari, Bhandari, Head of the State Treasury, Lekhak, Mahat, Village Chief or Mukhiya, Rokaya, Assistant to Mahat, Thapa, Khadka, Rana, Budha, Basnet, all are military ranks.
Surnames have also originated from the names of villages in Karnali Province. Dhital is derived from a place called Dhita, Pandey from Pandusera, Sinjapati from Sinja, Chaulagain from Chaidilagaun, Pyakurel from Pyakuri, Simkhada from Simkhada, etc. are surnames derived from places in Jumla and their names.
Timilsain in Achham is called Timilsina, Timsina, Ghimire from Ghamiraun, Devkot from Devkota, Dhungyani from Dhungana, Dhanku from Dhakal, Bajgaun from Bajgain, Rima from Rimal, Rasaili, Swara from Swar, Ghorasaini from Ghodasain, Pudasaini from Purasain, Dhamali from Dhamala, Darna from Darnal, Kuika from kuikel, Chalsa became Chalise, Barala became Baral, and Lamisal became Lamsal.
Similarly, Regmi became Regmi from Bajhang, Sot became Soti from Sot, Kharel from Khar, Subeda from Subedi from Subada, and Baniya from Bayana became Baniya.
Jamakatti of Bajura became Jamarakattel, Chantyal from Shrestha, Belkatiya from Belkate, Khatiwada from Khati. Gajurel from Gajari of Baitadi.
Dotel was formed from Dotekhola in Doti, Nirauli from Niraula, Ojha from Ojhana, Bogtan from Bogati, and Mudbhara from Mudbhari. Khanal was formed from Khanaya in Mugu, Kalyan from Kalaigaun, and Khatiwada from Khatyad.
From Lamachhanni in Dailekh to Lamichhane, from Baskot to Baskota, from Bastoli to Bastola, from Satla to Satyal, from Luyanti to Luitel, from Chapagaun to Chapagain, from Nepa to Nepal, from Riju to Rijal, from Pokhar to Pokharel, from Lamsu to Lamsal, from Lamji to Lamjel, from Daha to Dahal, From Bhurti, it became Bhurtel, from Parajul, it became Parajuli, from Koirali, it became Koirala, from Dawada, it became Dawadi, from Kattil, it became Kattel, from Bhusakot, it became Bhusal, from Saiyya, it became Suntel, from Badal, from Madasain, it became Marasaini, Marasini, from Gurgaon, it became Guragain.
From Khitkisen in Kalikot, Khirsine became Khirsine, from Bhurto to Bhurtel, from Ranchu to Ruchal, from Gela to Gelal, from Banjada to Banjade, from Banjkot to Bajkota, and from Sarpukot in Rukum became Sapkota.
Types of Bahun:
There are 2 types of bahun. The bahun who were from the west of mahakali river called as "kumauni bahuns" and the bahuns who were from the east of mahakali river(western nepal) are called "purvia bahuns". These both are khas bahuns as khas people lives in himalayan region from kashmir to sikkim."
