Years of Service

[edit]

The current article lists Augustus's years of service as 43-25 BC. However, as the head of the military, wouldn't it be more appropriate to list his years of service to extend to 14 CE (his death)? The Senate recognized his authority over the military from the very beginning. BradleyPelton (talk) 02:58, 4 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Which Drusus was dispatched to the Rhineland in or after AD 9?

[edit]

The article currently reads "A prime example of Roman loss in battle was the Battle of the Teutoburg Forest in AD 9, where three entire legions led by Publius Quinctilius Varus were destroyed by Arminius, leader of the Cherusci, an apparent Roman ally. Augustus retaliated by dispatching Tiberius and Drusus to the Rhineland to pacify it"

The only Drusus otherwise mentioned in the article is Nero Claudius Drusus who died in 9 BC. Who was dispatched to the Rhineland following the Battle of the Teutoburg Forest in AD 9? 198.27.224.184 (talk) 19:55, 29 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Possibly an anachronism. The one dispatched in the Rhineland was the proconsul Germanicus, whose birth name was probably "Nero Claudius Drusus". His legal name had changed to Germanicus Julius Caesar in AD 4, when he was adopted by his uncle Tiberius. Germanicus' brother Claudius originally used the legal name "Tiberius Claudius Drusus" but did not take part in military campaigns of this era. Tiberius' biological son Drusus Julius Caesar did not see active military service until AD 14, when he was assigned to face a rebellion in Pannonia. Dimadick (talk) 23:30, 29 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Semi-Protected Edit Request

[edit]

Hi there, I would like to replace the image in the sidebar with a new one that I have uploaded to Wikimedia Commons that is of much higher resolution and sharpness. https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Augustus_of_Prima_Porta.jpg compare with current https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Augustus_of_Prima_Porta_(inv._2290).jpg. Justin Benttinen (talk) 03:04, 7 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

I have done enough edits to make the change myself. The new image is both sharper and closer in color to the original in the Vatican Museums. Justin Benttinen (talk) 18:45, 9 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
