Breadalbane

This pages says that Atholl is bordering Breadalbane, whose page in turn says that it (B.) is a region in Atholl. Does it mean that historically the name Atholl designated a larger area, including Breadalbane, but this is no longer the case? --Thrissel (talk) 05:36, 3 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

etymology

so the common theory is that it comes from ath-fhotla, new ireland, whereas fraser proposes it comes from ath-fochla, way to the north? ok, then:

1) if ath can mean EITHER "new" or "way to", why aren't "new north" and "way to ireland" equally plausible?
2) why does fraser's theory depend on some "early spelling athochlach"? fochla seems a lot closer to FHOTLA itself, than to "ochlach"!!
