Date of Establishment

[edit]

The infobox states that the Challenge was established in 2009, but the citation (https://www.artoneill.ie/about) states that it was established in 2006. I changed the infobox to 2006 but someone changed it back. Is there another source that can clarify this? Thanks. SkywalkerEccleston (talk) 13:25, 5 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

hi @SkywalkerEccleston, I wrote the initial article and it confused me too. I spent a few weeks compiling all possible sources to make the article and make sense of the timeline.

The source says: "People have been commemorating the escape for many years, but in 2006 the Challenge became an organised event. Initially, the Art O'Neill Challenge was a fundraiser for rugby player Stuart Mangan."

Mangans accident, however, only happened in April 2008, so the source must be wrong. The first January to occur after his accident was Jan 2009, so any January-specific fundraiser to happen for Mangan must have happened then. He subsequently passed away in August 2009. The challenge didn't take place in 2010. It happened again in 2011, but I'm not sure if there was any Mangan fundraising element to it then, because he was already deceased over a year. I found some other sources from the Irish hillwalkers forum that backed up that Jan 2009 must have been the first time it took place as an organised event. These sources are there in the article.

Because of this, I believe the official page is just incorrect. It meant to say 2009 but instead said 2006? Seems to be the most simple explanation anyway. Anyone able to access newspaper sources from either of those two years though? There may be sources from January 2006 saying the first official Art On'Neill Challenge (as opposed to the unofficial 'walk') took place then, but I doubt it. Thanks for clarifying. Hopefully a reliable source can be found for this SkywalkerEccleston (talk) 23:48, 15 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
