POV and OR issues
[edit]The section "Freedom of Speech issues in Lithuania" seems to have issues with POV, OR, and SYNTH. To be clear, the core topic of the section, the criminal charges against Paleckis for his alleged slander, are definitely worth including in the article. However, while there is some useful content in the section that can be salvaged, the overall tone (I would say even the section heading) appears quite biased in favor of the subject of the article.
A couple examples of what seems like OR or POV:
- an initial acquittal for "insulting the Forest Brothers" was converted into a guilty verdict (raising the moral issue of double jeopardy in legal circles)
- I tried searching the web both in English and Lithuanian and was not able to find a single source other than Wikipedia that mentioned both "Algirdas Paleckis" and the phrase "double jeopardy". The legal issue of double jeopardy should be mentioned if it truly has been raised in reliable sources, but it should be omitted if it's OR.
- As of June 2025, no known human rights or freedom of speech (and/or press) organization has publicly raised the issue of the conviction and imprisonment of an EU citizen on the basis of opinions on historical matters.
- If no organization has raised the issue, then why should Wikipedia? The point of Wikipedia is to compile and summarize what reliable sources are already saying, not to try to push the conversation in a completely new direction.
- Paleckis's views on the "Forest Brothers" are in some cases congruent with United States policy, rendering his imprisonment all the more inexplicable in an EU country.
- Connecting US policy, Lithuania's EU membership, and Paleckis's views on the "Forest Brothers" in this way is SYNTH.
- This feels more like a sentence from an op-ed than a Wikipedia article. In particular, the word "inexplicable" is unencyclopedic and has an evaluative connotation.
Additionally, a lot of the content seems to be only tenuously connected to Paleckis himself. Only two of the references in this section even mention Algirdas Paleckis at all (TV3 and Bernardinai). The others are more general sources about Lithuanian history and memory politics. The entire paragraph beginning with "Researches into" suffers from this problem.
I think the right approach here would be to focus on what Paleckis specifically said, as well as the charges, verdicts, and public reactions to his specific case. More sources directly related to Paleckis should be cited, if available. A little bit of background information on controversies in Lithuanian memory politics could be okay, but there is currently an excessive amount and it is presented in a not-so-neutral way. For comparison, I think the article on Remigijus Žemaitaitis does a better job of explaining its subject's controversial statements and the associated investigations and reactions without getting too bogged down in WW2 history. 98.170.164.88 (talk) 07:58, 25 June 2025 (UTC)
- I removed the content; it has major problems. Reminder: you can be WP:BOLD and remove it too. -- Mindaur (talk) 17:54, 25 June 2025 (UTC)
