- I'm not sure if this would disqualify the article for DYK, but right now there's a large banner stating that the article needs a copyedit. Narutolovehinata5 (talk · contributions) 12:53, 25 July 2025 (UTC)
- No, Narutolovehinata5 the copyedit banner has never disqualified an article, as its not a a policy violation notice, just an opinion notice regarding style.--Kevmin § 13:34, 25 July 2025 (UTC)
Aeneas Valley over Aeneas
[edit]@SounderBruce: The precise name of this article is Aeneas Valley, as its written about the entire geographical feature. The "unincorporated community" of Aeneas does not actually exist, and never really did. It is/was centered on the former location of the post office, which was housed in a personal home, not a grouping of buildings. The majority of sources, especially more recent ones all reference Aeneas Valley not just Aeneas. As an additional note, I actively looked into the Wp:Reliable sourcing archives and found no discussions at all that mapquest was prohibited, and several discissions were it was mentioned as acceptable. What do you cite for the removal of the mapquest citation. Additionally what guideline is being cited for the tagging of hometown locator (the information is almost Bluesky, as its shown on any map viewed. Kevmin § 16:12, 24 July 2025 (UTC)
- A contested pagemove still needs to be properly discussed in a WP:RM as an exception to MOS:USPLACE. Using maps as citations has to be done carefully, especially in the wake of the RfC on the issue from 2023, to avoid claims of original research. MapQuest is a low-quality map source to begin with, and citing it for a business entry is highly inappropriate due to the self-published nature of the website. It would be better to use a review, travel guide, or other listing instead. HometownLocator is similarly problematic due to being auto-generated from questionable data sources; I recommend using USGS or WSDOT maps for location information, as they are reliable and produced under the supervision of professional cartographers. SounderBruce 18:16, 24 July 2025 (UTC)
- @SounderBruce: So the township map for showing Aeneas on the north side of the West Fork Sanpoil River and the Corresponding map for Not Dougs Country Kitchen and expresso on the same plot as the Aeneas Valley General store would satisfy your concerns? USPLACE does not Address geological features at all though, and the Valley has the majority precedent for the nomenclature. Cite your source that mapquest allows self publishing, as that is a claim contrary to the information I can find. As a note the 2023 RFC solidly supports the prosification of data seen on maps, as long as the prose matches the source map. I have done so, and followed documented policy.--Kevmin § 18:48, 24 July 2025 (UTC)
- My opposition is purely procedural; a contested page move must be resolved in a RM per the instructions at WP:RM#CM, not moved back in what amounts to an edit war. As for the maps, neither link actually works for me and I recommend using a county-level atlas or gazetteer that would be easier to cite. MapQuest does allow businesses to claim their spot on a map via Yext and is generally a poor source of information compared to their competitors. Regardless of that, a local business cannot be mentioned solely because it exits, per WP:NOTGUIDE; there has to be other coverage to establish its notability and worthiness of being included. An equivalent would be listing every fast food restaurant at a given exit because it falls within the city limits of a moderately-sized town. SounderBruce 05:28, 25 July 2025 (UTC)
- Regarding mapquest, the listing has not been claimed however, and while you deem it a low quality source, it has not at any point been restricted from being used as a source per WP:Reliable and the perennial discussions list or archives there. A quick look at Wp shows its use a reference across many articles, and often cited during deletion discussions. I will note this is not the same situation as "every fast food restaurant at a given exit because it falls within the city limits of a moderately-sized town". You cite NOTGUIDE for this, but article 2 makes an explicit carve out for notability " Notable locations may meet the inclusion criteria", and this fully falls into that carve out. This is one of only two licensed restaurants between Tonasket and Republic, a driving distance of over 50 miles one direction. I've noted before that there is a heavy urban bias to source availability and notability standards, which actively creates Bias against any rural articles. What county level, currently actively maintained atlas or gazetteer would you recommend using then? Ease of citation is not a rule and WP:NOTBURO notes that improvement of the encyclopedia allows for Wp:IAR situations in cases that the rules and guidelines are vague or an impediment to good faith edits and additions.--Kevmin § 14:27, 25 July 2025 (UTC)
