Limited scope?

[edit]

Great job EF5 on this article, but I suggested the article cover the whole western US for this period, not just the Yuba-Sutter floods. For example, the floods extended into Oregon, and all the way down California, which I only found out because I was working on an article recently that mentioned the floods - the Terminus Dam, which was built thanks to emergency funds after these floods. There were floods all throughout California, not just Yuba-Sutter, and only 37 of the 74 deaths were there. I suggest withdrawing the GAN for now, and if you're not up for expanding it, then no worries, this can be left for the future for how to expand the article. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 17:53, 29 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hurricanehink, I can't find sources on the Oregon portion or anywhere else in California. Also good to note this is linked at WP:7M and will probably see some other-editor expansion as a result. All the sources you see are what I could find. — EF5 17:57, 29 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Did you check out the USGS source I linked? This one? To quote its opening paragraph:
"The floods of December 1955-January 1956 in the Far Western States were in many respects the greatest in the area in the history of recorded streamflow. One outstanding feature of the floods was the unusually large area involved the western one-third of Nevada, the northern two-thirds of California, the western half of Oregon, one-third of western Idaho, and minor parts of Washington. Other outstanding features were the record-breaking peak discharges in much of the flooded area and the extensive flood damage. The loss of 72 lives was attributable to the flood and total damage amounted to about $190 million."
The document is a few hundred pages long, so there's a ton there. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 18:09, 29 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Hurricanehink, yes, and 90% of it didn't load (and still doesn't). — EF5 18:11, 29 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Maybe try this archived version? Or try on a different internet browser? Either way the document loads for me, and there's tons more information on the event. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 18:15, 29 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Doesn't load on mobile either, even with a completely different browser. Wayback Machine version does the same thing; the first 30 pages are blank, there's a single filled-in page and then after that it's just a blank/un-blank back and forth every ten-or-so pages. — EF5 18:21, 29 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
How about Google books? It's a public domain document, so there should be version of it online. You can also look up the document by its title, "Floods of December 1955-January 1956 in the Far Western States". There's also a part two located here. Either way, I think the article should be retitled to reflect the event covering much more of the western United States. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 18:55, 29 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Hurricanehink, sure, I'll take a look. I'll also get around to that other flood article listed at the "request" page, as I stated months ago we're running out of tornadoes to write about. :-) — EF5 18:57, 29 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Also, do feel free to start an RM. — EF5 19:00, 29 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Well since you have the GAN open, I wanted to discuss the needed expansion here, in case you wanted to withdraw. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 19:01, 29 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Hurricanehink, I'll deliberate and see if I can find a usable copy of that doc, and if not I'll withdraw from there and see the options moving forward. — EF5 19:02, 29 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hello EF5, thanks for your work on this article! I just wanted to let you know about possible resources on an archival educational website called California Revealed regarding the flood. Here are some links to the relevant media. 1955 Yuba City Flood: Interview with Carmelita Brewer, Jack Murphy, and Harold Newkom, and Yuba Sutter Flood Film. Great work so far! Thank you so much! I'll be sure to take a look, and add to the article where needed. EF5 19:16, 29 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Congrats!

You also made the seventh millionth article! Datawikiperson (talk) 08:11, 30 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Datawikiperson, well, almost. Technically that honor goes to Operators and Things. Thank you regardless! :-) — EF5 08:13, 30 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
