History

[edit]

In 2010, the station originated with Line 10 in the urban rail transportation network plan, and the station location is in front of the south gate of Sun Yat-sen University to the east of the Line 8 station. Originally, the station would share the same name with the Line 8 station as Sun Yat-sen University station. When Line 10 was officially established in 2017, the station was renamed Sun Yat-Sen University South Gate station. During the construction and preliminary design stage of Line 10, the location of the station is set at the intersection of Ruikang Road and Jinfang Road, in which the distance toward the Line 8 station was about 500 meters, therefore construction of the transfer passageway was cancelled.

At that time, the reply to the feasibility report of the Line 10 project also pointed out that Shuqian Road station and this station were changed from interchange stations to non-interchange stations, and the two stations should be designed as interchange stations to enhance the accessibility of the entire network.[2] In an interview with the media in October 2020, Guangzhou Metro stated that it was still studying the issue of an interchange with Line 8,[3] until the end of that month, when responding to a public suggestion, it stated that the station would construct a reservation for a long-term transfer passageway to connect to Sun Yat-sen University station of Line 8, and that it would be promoted in a coordinated manner when the implementation conditions are met.[4]

The station site was enclosed in February 2020.[5] Due to the conditions around the station and the progress of land acquisition and demolition, Exit D, No. 1 wind shaft and the safety evacuation exits are still in the construction stage, which cannot meet the fire protection needs of the station. Therefore, the station cannot be put into service when the initial section of Line 10 is opened.[6]
