The slaty-capped shrike-vireo (Vireolanius leucotis) is a species of bird in the family Vireonidae. It is found in Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, French Guiana, Guyana, Peru, Suriname, and Venezuela. Its natural habitats are subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests and subtropical or tropical moist montane forests.
The species is named for the distinctive slate-gray coloration on its crown, which contrasts with its olive-green back and yellowish underparts. It typically measures around 14 cm in length and has a robust, slightly hooked bill adapted for foraging among dense foliage. Slaty-capped shrike-vireos are known for their secretive behavior, often remaining high in the canopy where they can be difficult to observe.
They feed primarily on insects, spiders, and occasionally small fruits, gleaning prey from leaves and branches in the midstory and canopy. Their song is a rich, clear whistle, often heard before the bird is seen.
Although generally uncommon and patchily distributed, the species is classified as Least Concern by the IUCN due to its broad range. Nonetheless, ongoing habitat loss from deforestation and land-use change poses potential long-term threats, especially in regions with accelerating forest degradation.
