The siege of Harput (1516) took place between the Ottoman Empire and the Safavid State at Harput in March 1516. It concluded with the victory of the Ottoman Empire.[1][2][3]

Siege

[edit]

For the conquest of Eastern Anatolia, an army under the command of Karaman Beylerbeyi Hüsrev Pasha was sent to Diyarbakır Beylerbeyi Bıyıklı Mehmed Pasha. These relief forces laid siege to Harput before reaching Mehmed Pasha in the vicinity of Mardin.[4] The siege, which began on March 23, ended with an Ottoman victory after a three-day struggle.[5][6][7] The Karaman army, which did not wait long there, then passed to Bıyıklı Mehmed Pasha in the vicinity of Mardin.[8][9]

Post siege

[edit]

Harput was later organized as a sanjak affiliated to the Diyarbakır Beylerbeylik.
