Siege of Bayburt (1514)
The siege of Bayburt (1514) resulted in the Ottoman Empire capturing the city from the Safavid state.
Siege
[edit]As a result of the battle of Chaldiran in August 1514, the Safavid state lost its power in Northern Anatolia and could not protect its castles. Yavuz Sultan Selim, who wanted to take advantage of the lack of authority, ordered the siege of Bayburt and Kiğı, which were important positions on the northern road, by forming a joint force from the Governor of Trabzon, Bıyıklı Mehmed Bey, and the Governor of Yanya, Mustafa Bey.
When the Ottoman army arrived in front of Bayburt, he sent a surrender note to Kara Maksud-i, one of the Safavid commanders who undertook the protection of the castle. Upon his refusal, the castle was captured on Tuesday, October 17 as a result of attacks that began at an unknown time.[1][2][3][4][5][6][7]
Before the Kiğı Castle was besieged, he announced that he had surrendered and sent the keys to Bıyıklı Mehmed Bey. The Sultan, who received the news of the conquest of the two important castles in a short time, appointed Bıyıklı Mehmed Bey as Pasha; He added Bayburt, Erzincan and Karahisar Sanjaks to the existing Trabzon Sanjak.[8][9]
