Christopher Sheen Projemo Gonzales (born May 7, 1980) is a Filipino politician who has served as the representative for Eastern Samar's lone district since 2025. He previously served as the mayor of Guiuan from 2013 to 2019, overseeing the municipality's response to Typhoon Haiyan, which received a lukewarm reception from government agencies.
Early life
[edit]Gonzales was born in Guiuan, Eastern Samar, on May 7, 1980.[1][2]
Mayor of Guiuan (2013–2019)
[edit]Gonzales was elected as mayor of Guiuan in 2013.[3] During his tenure, Typhoon Haiyan struck Guiuan. Gonzales led the recovery efforts of the typhoon.[4] The Commission on Audit scored his administration's solid waste management for not meeting requirements.[5] Gonzales ran under the Nacionalista Party for his second term as mayor, winning with 18,024 votes.[6] On February 28, 2019, Gonzales was ordered to be suspended by the Office of the Ombudsman after he was exposed for irregularly using the fund for Typhoon Haiyan.[7] Gonzales replied by stating that the order was "political harassment".[8]
House of Representatives (since 2025)
[edit]Elections
[edit]Gonzales ran under the Nacionalista Party in the 2019 Philippine House of Representatives elections.[9] On May 10, Gonzales was unable to hold a rally in Guiuan because a truck allegedly owned by an opponent parked in the middle of the plaza.[10] Gonzales gained second place in the elections with 86,330 votes. He was beaten by then-Borongan mayor Maria Fe Abunda.[9] In late 2024, 19 mayors expressed disappointment on Maria Fe Abunda, pushing Gonzales to run for representative.[11] On October 8, 2024, Gonzales filed his certificate of candidacy for representative as an independent candidate.[3] He was endorsed by the Partido Federal ng Pilipinas, the party of President Bongbong Marcos.[12] On April 25, 2025, the COMELEC accused Gonzales of vote buying.[13] Gonzales won the elections, beating incumbent Maria Fe Abunda. He gained 177,413 votes, 49.34 percent of the votes.[14]
Tenure
[edit]Gonzales is set to take office on June 30, 2025.[citation needed]
Personal life
[edit]Gonzales is the brother of incumbent Guiuan mayor Annaliza Gonzales-Kwan.[4] He is the son-in-law of House Minority Leader Marcelino Libanan.[12]
