Shafik Quoraishee

Shafik Quoraishee is an American machine learning engineer and game developer, currently working as a Senior Games ML Engineer at The New York Times. He works on systems to support popular word games such as Crosswords, Connections, Strands, and Wordle. He has authored technical articles on topics ranging from handwriting recognition systems[1] in Nieman Lab, to ML techniques in puzzle games, and has spoken at conferences like Droidcon,[2] and industry summits. He also works with Wyna Liu, the editor of Connections, to build tools for puzzle analysis, as is highlighted in the New York Times technical posts.[3] He has been featured on notable Technology podcasts like The Brave Technologist, for his work.[4]

His work highlights the integration of AI and accessibility features in mobile game experiences. In 2025, at the AI Engineers World Fair in San Francisco, he spoke about the ability of AI to solve Connections, and abstract reasoning challenges that may need to systematically be overcome, to allow AI systems to develop more general cognition.[5]

Prior to his work at the New York Times, Shafik has had a significant stint in media, working for the NBA (National Basketball Association), Business Insider, and MTV/Viacom. Before his work in the Media space, Shafik had also previously worked at the Department of Defense as a research engineer, contributing to several studies for intelligent sensor systems in military applications.[6]
