Fr. Sebastian Mullooparampil, CMI (born 10 April 1964) is an Indian Syro-Malabar Catholic priest and professor of biblical theology. He teaches at Dharmaram Vidya Kshetram (DVK), a pontifical athenaeum in Bangalore, India. A specialist in the Synoptic Gospels, he is recognised for his academic contributions to New Testament studies. He is a member of the Carmelites of Mary Immaculate (CMI).[1]
Education
[edit]Fr. Mullooparampil began his priestly formation at Dharmaram Vidya Kshetram, where he earned a Bachelor of Philosophy in 1984. He later completed a Bachelor’s degree in Economics at Devagiri College, Calicut (1989), followed by a Bachelor of Theology from Jnana Deepa, Institute of Philosophy and Theology, Pune (1993).
He undertook advanced scriptural studies in Rome, earning a Licentiate in Sacred Scripture (LSS) from the Pontifical Biblical Institute in 2001. He completed his doctoral studies in Rome at the Pontifical University of Saint Thomas Aquinas (Angelicum), receiving a Ph.D. in 2005 for his dissertation on Matthean redaction and the cleansing of the Temple.
Academic career
[edit]Fr. Mullooparampil serves as Professor of Biblical Theology at DVK, where he has taught for over two decades. His academic focus lies in New Testament exegesis, particularly the Synoptic Gospels, and he regularly lectures on biblical hermeneutics, Greek, and theological method. He has supervised numerous licentiate and doctoral theses in the field of biblical theology.[2]
He previously held several administrative posts at DVK, including Dean of the Faculty of Theology, and contributed significantly to the development of its postgraduate academic programmes.[3][4]
Pastoral ministry
[edit]Alongside his academic commitments, Mullooparampil has been active in parish ministry. He served as Assistant Parish Priest at St Mary’s Forane Church, Kodenchery (1994–1995), and as Associate Director at Darsana Retreat Centre, Kannur (1995–1997). During his time in Rome, he was Assistant Parish Priest at Parrochia Gesù di Nazareth (1999–2005). Since 2009, he has served as Parish Priest at Mary Matha Church, Koramangala, Bangalore.[5]
