Sarah Caitllin Schupansky (born August 25, 2003) is an American professional soccer player who plays as a forward for Gotham FC of the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL). She played college soccer for the Pittsburgh Panthers, where she was the first player in program history to be named first-team All-ACC.

Early life and college career

[edit]

Schupansky was raised in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, one of three daughters born to Robert and Susan Schupansky.[2] She played soccer from an early age on a rec team coached by her father before joining the Riverhounds Development Academy at age 12. She played multiple positions before settling on forward, saying she admired United States national team players Alex Morgan, Rose Lavelle, and Crystal Dunn.[3] She attended North Allegheny High School, where she captained the soccer team to back-to-back WPIAL 4A championships in 2019 and 2020. She was named all-state twice and United Soccer Coaches All-American in 2020.[2][3] She committed to the University of Pittsburgh as a freshman in 2018 with the Panthers just starting their rebuild under new head coach Randy Waldrum.[3]

Pittsburgh Panthers

[edit]

Schupansky joined the Pittsburgh Panthers one semester early. Her first college goal came as the overtime winner against Oklahoma State. She finished her freshman year with 7 goals and 6 assists in 18 games in the 2021 season.[2][4] In her sophomore season in 2022, she scored 7 goals and led the team with 8 assists in 22 games. She helped the Panthers to their first NCAA tournament appearance in program history, with Schupansky scoring in their second-round win against Georgetown.[2][5]

She featured all over the front line and midfielder in her junior season in 2023, recording 11 goals and 14 assists in 24 games.[2][6] She was selected to the All-ACC first team, becoming the first Panther to be so honored.[7] She helped lead the Panthers to their first ACC tournament semifinal and NCAA tournament quarterfinal appearances, both times losing to Florida State.[6][8] She played for USL W League side Racing Louisville FC the following summer.[9] In her senior season in 2024, she scored 7 goals and led the nation with 15 assists in 18 games, earning second-team All-ACC honors. Pittsburgh narrowly missed selection to the NCAA tournament.[2][10][11]

Club career

[edit]

Gotham FC

[edit]

Gotham FC announced on December 23, 2024, that they had signed Schupansky to her first professional contract, a two-year contract with a team option to extend an additional year.[12] She made her professional debut on March 15, 2025, starting in the season opener against the Seattle Reign. She was named player of the match after a 1–1 draw.[13] On April 19, she registered her first professional assist to Esther in a 4–0 win away against Angel City FC.[14] One week later, on April 26, she scored her first professional goal and assisted Esther again as Gotham won 3–0 against the Washington Spirit.[15]

On May 21, in the semifinals of the 2024–25 CONCACAF W Champions Cup, Schupansky assisted Geyse from the corner spot, opening up a 3–1 win against Club América.[16]

International career

[edit]

Schupansky was called into training camp with the United States under-23 team, practicing alongside the senior national team, in March 2025.[17]
