Legal issues
[edit]Attempted Murder Case
[edit]On September 26, 2024, an attempted murder case was filed against Saddam Hussain and 65 others in connection with an alleged attack on Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) leaders at Dhaka University on September 27, 2022. The case was lodged by JCD joint general secretary Ariful Islam and accepted by the Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate's Court, which directed Shahbagh Police Station to register it as a First Information Report (FIR).[1]
Suspension from Dhaka University
[edit]In March 2025, a fact-finding committee at Dhaka University named Saddam Hussain among 128 students allegedly involved in violent incidents during the Anti-Discrimination Movement between July 15 and August 5, 2024. The university's syndicate decided to temporarily suspend these students based on the committee's findings.[2]
Banning of Bangladesh Chhatra League
[edit]On October 23, 2024, the interim government of Bangladesh banned the Bangladesh Chhatra League under the Anti-Terrorism Act of 2009. The ban was due to the organization's involvement in activities that obstructed public security, including murder, torture, and other forms of violence. Saddam Hussain, as the then-president of BCL, was implicated in these activities.[3]
Early life and education
[edit]Saddam Hussain was born in Panchagarh, Bangladesh. His father, Md. Aminul Haque, was a freedom fighter and a deputy commander of the Mujib Bahini during the Bangladesh Liberation War. He was also active in local politics under the Awami League banner.
Hussain completed his SSC from Thakurgaon Government High School (2008) and HSC from Notre Dame College, Dhaka. He studied law at the University of Dhaka and lived in Sir A.F. Rahman Hall. He ranked 15th in the university admission test.
Political career
[edit]Hussain began his political career with the Chhatra League while at Dhaka University. He served as organizing secretary of the Sir A.F. Rahman Hall unit and later became deputy secretary of legal affairs in the central committee.
In 2018, he was appointed general secretary of the Dhaka University unit of the BCL. In the 2019 DUCSU election, Hussain was elected assistant general secretary, receiving 15,301 votes—the highest of any candidate.
President of BCL
[edit]On 20 December 2022, Obaidul Quader announced Hussain as the new president of the BCL central committee. Sheikh Wali Asif Enan was named general secretary.
Statements and activism
[edit]In July 2024, during protests surrounding the quota system, Hussain claimed that certain activists were politicizing the movement and warned of action by the BCL. He also publicly supported Fulpori, a victim of campus harassment, and spoke out against ragging.
Controversies
[edit]In September 2024, Hussain and 65 others were named in an attempted murder case following clashes during protests.
In August 2024, the interim government banned the BCL under the Anti-Terrorism Act. Hussain condemned the move, calling it politically motivated.
In November 2024, reports suggested he and other BCL leaders had gone into hiding for safety reasons, he is widely criticized for his role in the antagonist role in July-August he, currently is in India and under Exile.
