Rojak (tribe)

Rojak [nb 1] (Persian: روژکی، روزکی، روسکی، روشکی Rūzagī; Kurdish: ڕۆژەک، ڕۆژەکی، ڕۆژەگی، ڕۆژەگ Rojak) is a large Kurmanji-Speaking Kurdish Tribal federation that inhabites the regions of Batlis, Mush and Khelat. They're adherent of Shafi' Sunni Islam. The rulers of Badlis Mirdom were the chief of Rojaki tribal confederation.[1]
Etymology
[edit]The name of the tribal federation comes from the Kurdish word Roj, which means "Sun". While Rojak in Kurdish means "a day/ single day".[1]
Origins
[edit]The Rojak tribal confederation was formed when Kurdish clans or tribes joining together in late 12th century, according to Sharafkhan Bidlisi it was 24 tribes. they predate the Ayyubids whom they were given the Bidlis region by them. According to Sharafkhan Bidlisi, the chief of Rojaki tribal confederation. The ruling family (Mirs) did not belong to any of those tribes or sub-tribes of the confederation, the chiefs of Rojak confederation claimed descendants of the Sasanian dynasty.[1]

Tribes of Rojaki confederation
[edit]The Rojak confedercy consists of Rojak proper; Bilbas and Qewalisi who conquered Bidlis in 12th century, originating from South East region, In some sources they came from Hakkari or Shahrazur.[2] And original tribes of Bidlis: Kisani, Bayigi, Modki, Zewqisi and Zeydani who joined the confederation after the conquest.[1][2] The number of sub-tribes given by Sharafkhan Bidlisi is his wish to arrive at 24 sub-tribes. It should be noted when sharafkhan writes about Rojak he puts Kurdiki or Girdiki as a branch of Qewalisi. While elsewhere he describes Kurdiki or Girdiki as a large tribe residing in Bidlis, before the conquest of Rojak proper.[1]
