Red Hill is an unincorporated community in Perry County, Kentucky, United States. It lies in the southeastern region of the state within the Appalachian Mountains and is predominantly rural in character.[2]

Geography

[edit]

Red Hill is situated about 12 miles southeast of Hazard, the county seat of Perry County. The community lies at an elevation of approximately 958 feet (292 meters) and is part of the Cumberland Plateau, which is known for its forested hills and valleys.[3]

History

[edit]

Red Hill, like many small communities in Eastern Kentucky, has historical roots in agriculture and coal mining. The name "Red Hill" may have originated from the red-colored soil or a prominent hill nearby. Community development in this region was influenced by migration patterns in the Appalachian area in the early 20th century.[4]

Economy

[edit]

The local economy has historically revolved around coal mining, logging, and small-scale farming. As with much of Eastern Kentucky, the decline of the coal industry in recent decades has led to job losses and population decline in Red Hill and surrounding areas.[5]

Education

[edit]

Red Hill falls under the jurisdiction of the Perry County School District. Students from Red Hill typically attend nearby schools such as Robinson Elementary or Perry Central High School in Hazard.[6]

Transportation

[edit]

Transportation in and out of Red Hill is primarily by road. The community is accessible via local roads that connect to Kentucky Route 476, which provides access to Hazard and other nearby areas. Public transit is limited, and most residents rely on private vehicles.[7]

Notable features

[edit]

Red Hill is located within the greater Appalachian region, which is noted for its natural scenery, biodiversity, and cultural heritage. Nearby recreational areas include parts of the Daniel Boone National Forest, which offers hiking, camping, and wildlife observation opportunities.[8]
