Era | Third generation of Amoraim |
Rav Avya was a third-generation Babylonian Amora who was a student of Rav Yosef bar Hiyya[1][2] and would recite teachings in his name.[3]
He was a colleague of Rabbah Bar Rav Hanan.[4] It appears that he moved to Israel for a short time, as the Talmud says that he stood before Rabbi Ammi.[5] Similarly, he spoke before Rabbi Abbahu and Rabbi Johanan bar Nappaha.[6] Which implies that he went to Caesarea after Rabbi Ammi had founded his Yeshiva there.
Apparently, he later moved to Babylon where he studied under Rav Huna and was considered one of his greatest students.[7][8]
He was married to the sister of Rami bar Pappa.[9][10] After her death, he married the sister of Rami bar Hama.[11]
He had several sons who were Torah scholars. Rav Chiya,[12] Rav Adda,[13] Rav Chilkiya,[14] and Rav Huna.[15] There is an Amora named Rav Achya bar Avya, who may be another son of his.
His teachings
[edit]In Shabbat 23a Rav Avya explains the basis of the blessing over lighting Hanukkah candles comes from the verse, "You shall not turn aside from the sentence which they shall declare unto you, to the right, nor to the left” (Deuteronomy 17:11).
In Megillah 17a, he says the reason that Hallel may not be recited out of order is from the verse, “Blessed be the name of the Lord” (Psalms 113:2),
