Rose Connolly (born 1999/2000),[1] known mononymously as Róis ([ɾˠoːʃ] ROE-sh, lit. 'rose', often capitalised RÓIS) is a composer, singer and multi-instrumentalist from County Fermanagh, Northern Ireland.[2] She is known for singing in a keening style, the traditional Irish lament.[3]
Early life
[edit]Róis was born and grew up in County Fermanagh.[4] She did not learn Irish until she was in college. She later studied music at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague.[5][6]
Career
[edit]Róis first album was Uisce agus Bean (lit. 'Water and woman'), released in 2023.[7] She cites Meredith Monk, Marina Herlop, Daniela Lalita and Hatis Noit as inspirations.[8][6]
Her second album Mo Léan (lit. 'My sorrow') was released in 2024 and was nominated for the Choice Music Prize. The Guardian gave it four stars out of five, saying that "Connolly fills [keening] with new, startling life, mixing the ancient with synthesis, distortion and drones."[9]
Personal life
[edit]Róis is based in Belfast.
