Project Carbon X2
Project Carbon X 2 was an ultramarathon event held on January 23, 2021, in Chandler, Arizona. It was organized by the athletic footwear brand Hoka One One and featured elite runners attempting world records in the 100-kilometer distance. The race also coincided with the launch of the company’s updated long-distance racing shoe, the Carbon X 2.
Background
[edit]The first Project Carbon X event was held in 2019 to promote the original Carbon X shoe. During that race, American ultrarunner Jim Walmsley set a world best for the 50-mile distance with a time of 4:50:08.[1]
The 2021 event was created to introduce the Carbon X 2 model and provide a venue for athletes to pursue long-distance records. It took place during the COVID-19 pandemic, and organizers implemented safety protocols including health screenings, limited on-site personnel, and the absence of live spectators. The race was held on a closed-loop course at Wild Horse Pass Motorsports Park and was broadcast online. A parallel race was held in Japan to allow international participation.[2]
Race Summary
[edit]Jim Walmsley led the men’s race and completed the 100 kilometers in 6:09:26, setting a new American record and finishing just 12 seconds short of the world record held by Japan's Nao Kazami. Walmsley’s performance received notable attention within the ultrarunning community.[1]
The women’s race was won by French runner Audrey Tanguy, who finished in 7:40:36. Nicole Monette and Courtney Olsen placed second and third, respectively.
Shoe Technology
[edit]The event marked the introduction of HOKA’s Carbon X 2, a racing shoe designed for long-distance road running. It features a carbon fiber plate within the midsole and utilizes the company’s PROFLY™ cushioning, which combines a soft heel for impact absorption with a firmer forefoot for propulsion. The outsole uses rubberized EVA foam to reduce weight. These design elements were intended to enhance running efficiency, according to the manufacturer.[2]
Reception and Significance
[edit]Project Carbon X 2 was part of a broader trend in distance running that includes advances in footwear technology and increased attention to ultramarathon events. It also highlighted how sporting events adapted to pandemic conditions through livestreaming and limited in-person attendance.
