Phaibung is a village in the Purul subdivision of Senapati district, Manipur, India. It includes two closely linked settlements: Phaibung Khullen and Lower Phaibung.[1][2]
Demographics
[edit]As per the 2011 Census:
- Phaibung Khullen: Population 4,664 (2,363 m; 2,301 f), sex ratio 974 ♀/1,000 ♂, literacy 37.3 %.[3]
- Lower Phaibung: Population 990 (527 m; 463 f), sex ratio 879, literacy 49.1 %.[4]
Scheduled Tribe populations exceed 99% in both settlements.[1]
Geography
[edit]Phaibung lies approximately 27 km east of Senapati town and about 79 km north of Imphal. Nearby villages in the Purul block include Shirong (Shirong Shofii), Oklong, and Purul Atongba.[5][6]
Economy
[edit]Agriculture is the primary livelihood: most residents work as cultivators, growing rice, maize, and pulses. In Lower Phaibung, 99.66 % of the workforce are engaged in main agricultural activities.[1]
Administration
[edit]The village is governed by a local Gram Panchayat under the Chillivai Phaibung TD Block of Senapati district.[7] It falls within the Purul Assembly Constituency for the Manipur Legislative Assembly and is part of the Outer Manipur Lok Sabha constituency.[8]
Language and culture
[edit]Local residents of Phaibung speak Meitei as the official language of the region, which is indicated as the widely used lingua franca in Senapati district.[9] Many belong to Naga ethnic communities, with the Tangkhul people being prominent. While they have their own Tangkhulic languages, they also commonly use Meitei for communication across communities.[10]

- Served by: Bir Tikendrajit International Airport, Imphal (≈80 km).
- Connected by: the Senapati–Phaibung rural road, which branches eastward off National Highway 2. Ongoing construction of the 128 km road has faced delays; local coverage of road conditions was reported by The Sangai Express in July 2024.[13]
