History
[edit]The history of Pariwan is intrinsically linked with the broader history of the Kulgam district. The name Kulgam itself has historical roots, with early texts like Tazkira Sadat-i-Simnania referring to the area as Shampora. It was later renamed Kulgam by Syed Hussain Simnani, combining the Sanskrit words Kul (clan) and Gam (village).[2] Simnani is noted for inviting Hazrat Amir Kabir Mir Hamdani to Kashmir, alongside other significant poets and saints such as Sheikh Noor-ud-din Noorani and Lal Ded, who contributed to the region\'s rich spiritual and cultural heritage.[2]
Historically, the Kulgam region, including areas around Pariwan, served as a hunting ground for Mughal emperors and Dogra rulers. During the Mughal era, a Tehsil was established under Sheikh Hamza Makhdoom, encompassing a wide jurisdiction that included Doru, Banihal, Gulabgarh, and Shopian. Over time, some of these constituent units, like Pulwama, Shopian, and Reasi, evolved into separate districts.[2] Kulgam district itself was carved out from the Anantnag district and became a functional administrative unit on April 2, 2007.[2]
The area holds significant religious and cultural importance. It is associated with prominent religious figures like Sayed Simnan Sahib, who chose Kulgam as his permanent residence. The district is also the birthplace of Sheikh Noor-ud-din Noorani, the founder of the Rishi order, and is linked to the ancestral lineage of notable personalities such as Allama Iqbal and Jawaharlal Nehru.[2]
Recent archaeological excavations at Kutbal, a nearby village, have unearthed artifacts dating back to the Kushana period (1st century AD). These findings suggest the presence of a sophisticated civilization with advanced civic sense, social norms, and artistic practices in the region during that era.[2]
Economy
[edit]The economy of Pariwan, like much of the Kulgam district, is primarily agrarian. Kulgam is historically known as the "Rice Bowl of Kashmir," with over 80% of its population deriving income directly or indirectly from agriculture.[5] The district is also renowned for its fruit production, particularly apples.[2] While specific economic data for Pariwan is limited, its proximity to Kulgam town (9 km away) suggests that Kulgam serves as the main economic hub for the village, facilitating trade and access to markets for agricultural produce and other economic activities.[1][4]
Education
[edit]Education in Pariwan is supported by local institutions. As of 2011, the literacy rate in Pariwan was 53.13%, with male literacy at 61.54% and female literacy at 44.50%.[1] One notable educational institution in the village is HS Pariwan, which was established in 1954 and is managed by the Department of Education.[6]
