Paola Dmitryevna Volkova (Russian: Паола Дми́триевна Во́лкова; July 23, 1930 – March 15, 2013) was a Soviet and Russian art critic, cultural historian. Honored Worker of the Arts Industry of the Russian Federation (1996).[1]

Biography

Paola graduated from the Moscow State Library Institute.

From the late 1950s to 1987, she taught at the All-Union State Institute of Cinematography, teaching four courses on Russian and foreign art, on the history of costume, and on the art and culture of ancient China.

From 1976 until the last days of her life, she taught film design at the High Courses for Scriptwriters and Film Directors.[2]

In 1989-2002 — Director of the Andrei Tarkovsky Foundation in Moscow.[3]

In 2011-2013, she hosted the author's series of programs Bridge over the Abyss on the Kultura TV about the history of world painting.

Author of more than 50 publications in periodicals and books on contemporary art, as well as on the work of Tarkovsky.[4]

Columnist of The Art Newspaper Olga Kabanova places Volkova on a par with other outstanding Russian educators of the 20th century: Dmitry Likhachev, Yuri Lotman, Irakly Andronnikov.[5]

She died on March 15, 2013 in Moscow. The urn with her ashes was buried at the Donskoye Cemetery (section 4).[6] Some of the ashes were scattered over the Venetian Lagoon.[7][8]

The Tretyakov Gallery houses a portrait of Paola Volkova, painted in 1959 by the artist Vladimir Weisberg.
