Oleksandr Rodin or Alexander Rodin (Ukrainian: Олександр Леонідович Родін, Belarusian: Аляксандр Леанідавіч Родзін; born 2 January 1975) is a Ukrainian composer, musician, actor, painter. Member of the National Union of Composers of Ukraine (2005).[1][2][3]
Biography
[edit]Oleksandr Rodin was born on 2 January 1975, in Paddabranka (now Belarus).[1][2][4]
In 1994, he graduated from the piano class of the Chernihiv Levko Revutskyi Music School, and in 2001, from the Odesa Conservatory.[1][2]
On 24 April 2025, the audiovisual project "Illumination of the Soul," which combines Oleksandr Rodin's painting and music, premiered at the Odesa Opera.[5]
He lives and works in Kyiv.[2]
Works
[edit]He gained his first compositional experience while studying at the music college in Chernihiv.[6] He mastered composition on his own, which earned him a reputation as a "semi-professional" composer. However, despite this, he stands out among young Ukrainian composers because his works are regularly performed at subscription concerts of the National Philharmonic of Ukraine.[7] He creates music in various genres, including symphonic works, choral compositions, chamber and instrumental music, as well as ballets and operas.[1][2] His works are performed in Japan, the USA, and Europe. He became the first among contemporary Ukrainian composers whose works were included in the repertoires of European theaters.[5]
He collaborates with choreographer Radu Poklitaru.[8] He has also acted in several television series.[6]
Oleksandr Rodin's style can be described as neo-academic. He combines classical rules of academic music with contemporary musical elements of the 21st century. His works intertwine pure harmony with dissonance, lyrical episodes with dramatic ones, melodiousness with elements of randomness, as well as features of Impressionism and Expressionism.[1][2]

- Kateryna, opera based on the works of Taras Shevchenko (2022; author of libretto and music;[9] staged at the Odesa Opera and Ballet Theatre in 2022,[10] which received the "best opera house" award at the International Opera Awards 2022 for the work[1][11] nominated for the Shevchenko National Prize[12])
- Requiem (in memory of the Holodomor victims) for symphony orchestra, choir, and soloists;[13]
- Sim ostannikh sliv Isusa na Khresti", Sviatyi Bozhe",[14] "Romantychna"[15] for symphony orchestra
- "Barakholka, symphonic cycle
- Stabat Mater, for soprano, mezzo-soprano, and string orchestra;[16]
- Liubov Smert, cantata based on poems of Charles Baudelaire for soprano and orchestra
- Panakhyda, for mixed choir
- Pisn Vsesviatii Bohorodytsi, for mixed choir
- Missa Luminosa, for soprano and strings[17]
- Knyha Snovydin, for strings and percussion
- Eskizy dlia fortepiano, cycle for piano
- Pislia prochytannia Lavkrafta, for strings
- Shchodennyk samotnosti, premiered in 2024 at the Brooklyn Conservatory of Music[18]
- Pory Roku (2013),[6] Vydinnia Rozy (2014), Vhoru po richtsi (2017), Viy (2019), ballets,[19][20][21] "Aladdin" (2021)[8][22] all created together with the Kyiv Municipal Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre and the Ukrainian contemporary dance theater Kyiv Modern-Ballet[23]); "Soliaris" based on Stanisław Lem for the Lviv Opera (author of music and librettist);[4][24]
Rodin has made many adaptations of Ukrainian folk songs, updated classical works, and scored dramatic performances, films, and television series.
