Nungou Yumthangba, also spelled Nungngou Yumthangba was the founder (Meitei: ꯃꯕꯨꯙꯧ, romanized: Mabudhou) of the Chenglei clan of Meitei people of Manipur.[1][2]

Origins of the Chenglei lineage

[edit]

The Chengleiron, which is the genealogical chronicle of the Chenglei clan, records that Tharang and Queen Huimu Leima gave birth to 4 sons, namely:[3]

  • Lokpa
  • Lamlekshang Hao Oiba
  • Nungou Yumthangba
  • Lokton Atonba

Founding Lineages

[edit]

Between the four brothers, Nungou Yumthangba is looked on as the founder of the main line of the Chenglei (Sarang Leishangthem) clan. His descendants is believed to have formed the central lineage in the Chenglei clan, known as Thangyi in Ancient Manipur.[1][2]

His brother Lamlekshang, migrated to the hills and settled there.[4] His descendants became the Songbu Kabui tribe, who inhabit the southwestern hills of Manipur in the present day.[2]

Other Chenglei Families

[edit]
  • Lokpa established the Haorok-Konthou lineage, whom his descendants became the Konthoujam family.[5]
  • Lokton Atonba founded the Loktonbam family.[5]

All these lineages—Konthoujam, Loktonbam, and the core Sarang Leishangthem line (Thangyi), all belong to the broader Chenglei clan, though each maintains its own bloodline identity within the clan.[6]

Descendants of Nungou Yumthangba

[edit]

The descendants of Nungou Yumthangba gradually formed all of the families within the Chenglei clan, except the Konthoujam and Loktonbam families.[5]
