Nowa Street is a street in Kraków, in district Old Town, in the Kazimierz neighborhood.[1]
It connects Nowy Square with Józefa Street. It is a single-carriageway road.
History
[edit]From the late 15th century, the Jewish population began settling near the street. In the 19th century, most of the wealthier residents moved to other districts of Kraków, while the area around Nowa Street, like much of Kazimierz, became home to the Jewish poor.
Nowa Street likely existed as early as the Middle Ages. In 1844, it was marked on the plan of Kazimierz as Rybna Street. This name was justified by the fact that fish trading took place near the street.[2]
In 1881, the Kraków City Council gave the street its current name, which is associated with Nowy Square.[2]
Buildings
[edit]The street is lined mostly with tenement houses.[3]
