Nganwa High School is a government-aided, boys-only, boarding secondary school located in Sheema Municipality, Sheema District, in the Western Region of Uganda.
Originally founded in 1967 as a mixed school named Kabwohe Secondary School, the institution was restructured in 1998. The boys' section was renamed Nganwa High School in honour of the former Prime Minister (Enganzi) of the Ankole kingdom, Kesi K. Muha Nganwa, while the girls' section became the separate Masheruka Girls' Secondary School.[2] The school is affiliated with the Church of Uganda and is known for its academic record and prominent alumni.
History
[edit]The school was established in 1967 as Kabwohe Secondary School, a mixed-gender, post-primary institution founded by the West Ankole Diocese of the Church of Uganda. Its mission was to provide accessible secondary education based on Christian principles to students in the region.[1]
For three decades, it operated as a co-educational school. In 1998, a major restructuring was undertaken to create separate single-sex schools. The institution was split, leading to the formation of two distinct entities:
- Nganwa High School, which remained on the original campus as a boys-only school.
- Masheruka Girls' Secondary School, established as the corresponding girls-only school.
This separation led to the creation of the "Mashe-Nganwa solidarity," a long-standing social and academic connection between the two schools.[2]
Naming
[edit]Following the 1998 restructuring, the boys' school was renamed in memory of Owekitinisa Kesi K. Muha Nganwa (c. 1911–1962), who served as the Enganzi (Prime Minister) of the Ankole kingdom from 1955 until its decentralization. Nganwa was a widely respected educator, politician, and a pioneering figure in Ankole's history, celebrated for his contributions to education and for being the first non-royal (Mwiru) to hold the powerful office of Enganzi.[3] The renaming was a tribute to his legacy in the region.
Location
[edit]Nganwa High School is situated on Kabwohe hill in the heart of Sheema Municipality, along Masheruka Road. Its campus is located within a cluster of community institutions, including St. Emmanuel Church of Uganda Kabwohe, Nganwa Junior School, and the Ankole Western University.
Academics
[edit]The school offers both Ordinary Level (O-Level) and Advanced Level (A-Level) curricula, preparing students for examinations administered by the Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB). It has maintained a reputation for strong academic performance in national examinations over the years.
Governance
[edit]The school is managed by a Board of Governors and supported by an active Parents-Teachers Association (PTA). Over the years, its governance bodies have included notable public figures, such as former Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIGP) Asan Kasingye and former Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation Elioda Tumwesigye have previously served as the chairperson of the Board of Governors.[4][5]

[edit]The school, in both its current and former state as Kabwohe Secondary School, has produced many prominent alumni who have served in various leadership capacities in Uganda.
- Thomas Tayebwa: Deputy Speaker of the Parliament of Uganda.[6]
- Asan Kasingye: Former Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIGP)
- David Lewis Rubongoya: Lawyer and Secretary General of the National Unity Platform (NUP) party.[7]
- Molly Kamukama: Politician and former Minister of State for Economic Monitoring. (Attended when it was Kabwohe S.S.).[8]
- Maud Kamatenesi Mugisha: Professor and Vice Chancellor of Bishop Stuart University. (Attended when it was Kabwohe S.S.).[9]
- Francis Takirwa: Major General in the Uganda People's Defence Force (UPDF) and Deputy Commander of Land Forces.[2]
- Dickson Kateshumbwa: Member of Parliament for Sheema Municipality and former Commissioner for Customs at Uganda Revenue Authority (URA).[10]
