Narendra Mohan (10 October 1934 – 20 September 2002) was an Indian politician and journalist. He was managing director of Jagran Prakashan; and publisher of Hindi-language newspaper Dainik Jagran.[1].

Life

[edit]

In the early 1940s, while living in Kanpur, Narendra Mohan reportedly did not have enough money to buy a bicycle and relied on a bullock cart for transportation.[citation needed]

Mohan entered politics and became a Member of Parliament (MP) for BJP, after encouragement from his political mentor, Lal Krishna Advani.

Mohan's father, Puran Chand Gupta, founded Dainik Jagran in Jhansi, Uttar Pradesh.[2] This was his third attempt at starting a news business. The newspaper was among the first to switch to color and print satellite editions. It employs about 3,500 journalists, editors & writers and introduced the concept of mohalla correspondents, or individuals who provide news and updates from their local communities.

According to the Telegraph India, Mohan, who was the former chairman of the Press Trust of India, campaigned for allowing Foreign Direct Investment in the print media.[3]

Sanjay Gupta, Mohan's eldest son, is the editor-in-chief and CEO of Dainik Jagran.[4][5]

Mohan died at the Apollo Hospital in New Delhi on 20 September 2002, at the age of 67, following a multi-organ failure.[3]
