Napa (Portuguese pronunciation: [ˈnapɐ]; stylised in all caps) is a Portuguese indie band from Madeira consisting of Diogo Góis, Francisco Sousa, João Guilherme Gomes, João Lourenço Gomes, and João Rodrigues. They represented Portugal in the Eurovision Song Contest 2025 with the song "Deslocado".[1]

Career

Formed in 2013 on the island of Madeira, Napa started under the name Men on the Couch. Citing Arctic Monkeys, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and The Beatles as their influences, they began their compositions in English and recorded their songs in one of the band members' grandmother's basement.[2] In 2019, they released their first album, Senso comum, recorded at BlackSheep Studios in Sintra.[3] The project was financed through a crowdfunding campaign, which raised around 3,500 without support from publishers.[4]

In 2023, the band released their second album, Logo se vê. It was then that the band changed their name to Napa, a fabric commonly used to cover couches.[5][6] In 2024, the band performed their first national tour. They later released the concert film entitled O Mundo Continua a Girar, recorded over two sold-out nights at the Maria Matos Theatre.[7]

Eurovision Song Contest 2025

[edit]

Participation in Festival Da Canção

[edit]

Napa was officially announced to compete in Festival da Canção on 23 January 2025.[8] "Deslocado" was drawn to compete in the second semi-final, and was later announced as one of the six qualifiers, winning the semi-final with 20 points.[9][10] The song performed seventh at the final on 8 March 2025, winning the final with 17 points, scoring the 7 points from the expert jury and 10 points from the public televote.[11]

At Eurovision

[edit]

The Eurovision Song Contest 2025 took place at St. Jakobshalle in Basel, Switzerland, and consisted of two semi-finals held on the respective dates of 13 and 15 May and the final on 17 May 2025.[12] During the allocation draw held on 28 January 2025, Portugal was drawn to compete in the first semi-final, performing in the first half of the show.[13] Napa was later drawn to perform 7th, ahead of Sweden's KAJ and before Norway's Kyle Alessandro.[14]

For its Eurovision performance, the staging remained mostly similar to the one performed in Festival da Canção 2025, featuring a minimalist and gradual build-up.[15] The performance opened with slow camera movements and a gradual zoom out as lead singer Guilherme walked slowly from the back of the stage to the front, initially avoiding the walkway. He was joined by guitarist Francisco and bassist Diogo during the first chorus.[16] The visual design utilized a palette alternating between blue and pastel orange with floating clouds and animated skyscapes, culminating in a final section highlighted by orange lighting and pastel hues set against a blue background, referencing Madeira's natural landscape.[17][18] "Deslocado" finished ninth in the first semi final, scoring 56 points and securing a position in the grand final.[19][20]

Napa performed a repeat of their performance in the grand final on 17 May. The song was performed 21st, ahead of Malta's Miriana Conte and before Denmark's Sissal.[21] After the results were announced, the band finished 21st with 50 points, with a split score of 37 points from juries and 13 points from public televoting. Regarding the former, the song not receive any sets of 12 points; the most a country gave was a seven from the Netherlands. The song also did not receive any sets of 12 points from the public televote; the most a country gave was an eight, with it being awarded by Luxembourg.[22]
