Denpasar is one of the 93 autonomous cities in Indonesia,[2] which means it runs its own government and has the authority to regulate government affairs and the interests of the locals.[2] A mayor is the title given to the highest head of government in an autonomous city, along with the vice mayor as a deputy in the government.

The current mayor is I Gusti Ngurah Jaya Negara, who took office on February 26, 2021.

Elections

[edit]

Since 2005 as the enactment of Law Number 32 of 2004 in Indonesia, heads of local government (governors, regents and mayors) have been directly elected by popular election.[3]

The election is held every five years, elections for mayor and vice mayor are held for a fixed five-year term.

Most recent election

[edit]

The most recent election was held on 27 November 2024 to elect both the mayor and vice mayor of Denpasar for the 2025 to 2030 term. The election was held as part of local elections for governors, regents, and mayors across 36 other provinces in Indonesia.[4]
