[edit]

Gray was elected to the House of Representatives in 2016, winning with 52.16% against Republican opponent Karen Nelson.[3]

DUI arrest

[edit]

Gray was arrested on April 21, 2022 on suspicion of driving under the influence. The arrest took place in front of an elementary school in Broomfield, Colorado, which is in the legislative district Gray represents and he was there picking up his daughter after school. Gray is a former prosecutor in Colorado's 17th judicial district, the district in which the arrest occurred.[4][5]

Police were called by school officials concerned about Grey's behavior and the strong odor of alcohol emanating from him. Police also noticed the strong smell and asked Grey to perform field sobriety tests, which he denied, perform a breath test, which he denied and was finally offered a blood test, which he also denied. Grey continues to deny he was drunk on that day, claiming that he instead was experiencing the effects of Anxiety and Depression. In 2023, the police bodycam was released from the Bloomfield Police Department in which Grey is very obviously intoxicated.

“I am deeply saddened and disappointed to learn of Matt Gray’s arrest,” House Speaker Alec Garnett, a Denver Democrat, said in a statement provided to Newsline. “I don’t have all the facts at the moment, but it’s my belief that he has been struggling with alcoholism for some time now. I’m very thankful no one appears to have been hurt, and I strongly believe he needs to take time — beginning right now — to get the help he needs.” When asked for statement Grey said, “As many of you know, yesterday I was arrested on suspicion of DUI,” Gray wrote. “I was not intoxicated, but my symptoms of anxiety and depression are such that too many people are worried when they’re around me. I’m going to increase my level of therapy and appreciate all the support.”

He later plead guilty to one count DUI with one year of probation and suspension of drivers license for refusal to blow or provide a blood sample. After sentencing Grey refused to comment and has yet to apologize for his actions. [6][7]
