Malik Shafqat Abbas Awan ( ملک شفقت عباس اعوان) is a Pakistani lawyer and politician who has been serving as a member of the National Assembly of Pakistan since February 2024, representing the constituency NA-84 (Sargodha-III). He is affiliated with the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI). Awan is known for his decades-long legal activism, role in the Lawyers' Movement, and support for judicial reform and political freedom.
Early life and education
[edit]Awan received his law degree from the International Islamic University, Islamabad in 2004. He began practicing at the District Bar Association, Sargodha, and quickly gained recognition for his commitment to justice and legal integrity.
Legal career
[edit]Awan was an active participant in the 2007 Lawyers' Movement for the restoration of the judiciary. In 2011, he contested for General Secretary of the Bar but narrowly lost. He ran again in 2013 and won, prioritizing legal community welfare and advocating for the establishment of a Lahore High Court bench in Sargodha. The Punjab government's subsequent approval of regional benches was considered a significant milestone.
He was elected President of the Sargodha Bar Association in 2022. During his term, he led social initiatives such as blood donation drives for thalassemia patients and continued to push for judiciary decentralization.[1]
Political activism
[edit]Following the removal of Imran Khan's government in 2022, Awan emerged as a vocal supporter of the former Prime Minister and became actively involved in political resistance movements. His speeches, demonstrations, and social media statements led to multiple arrests during the 2023 political crackdown. He was imprisoned for over a month during protests in May and August 2023.
2024 general election
[edit]In the 2024 general elections, Awan was initially nominated by PTI to run from NA-84, but his papers were rejected by the returning officer. He contested as an independent while appealing the rejection. The Election Tribunal ruled in his favor, reinstating his candidacy for NA-84, PP-75, and PP-76.[2]
Despite security threats and reports of his and his family’s brief abduction during campaigning, Awan secured a decisive victory on 8 February 2024. He received 101,949 votes, defeating the PML-N candidate, Liaqat Ali Khan, who received 77,478 votes.[3]
Parliamentary role
[edit]Malik Shafqat Abbas Awan took oath as a Member of the National Assembly of Pakistan on 29 February 2024. He advocates for legislative reforms, judicial independence, and the creation of more regional legal infrastructures, particularly in Punjab.
Social media and outreach
[edit]Malik Shafqat Abbas Awan actively leverages social media platforms to engage with his constituents, promote the agenda of PTI, and highlight key national and local issues. His official Facebook page, which has over 38,000 followers, serves as a primary channel for public interaction, campaign updates, and dissemination of PTI's policies and initiatives.[4]
In addition to Facebook, Awan maintains a strong presence on Twitter and Instagram, further strengthening his connection with the youth and digital audience of Pakistan. Through consistent updates and engagement, he promotes transparency, responds to public concerns, and mobilizes support for PTI's political objectives.
