mTube (Burmese: အမ်ကျုဘ်) is a Myanmar-based video sharing website that allows users to upload and view videos for free.[1][2] Similar in function to YouTube, the platform features content such as technology-related programming, local knowledge, music, and films.[3] It is intended to disseminate educational information and promote state messaging to the public.

The platform is owned and operated by the Ministry of Information of Myanmar.[4]

History

[edit]

Following the military coup in Myanmar in 2021, YouTube removed the channels of state-run MRTV (Myanmar Radio and Television) and military-owned Myawaddy TV, citing violations of its policies.[5] As a result, the Ministry of Information faced increasing restrictions and content takedowns across social media platforms such as Facebook and YouTube.

In response, the Ministry initiated the development of an alternative video-sharing service, known as the mTube Live Streaming Platform, modeled after YouTube and intended as a domestic substitute.[6]

The platform’s technical operations are reportedly led by United Info-Sec, a Myanmar-based information technology company contracted by the Ministry.[7]
