Luwangsangbam is a census town and village in the Porompat tehsil of Imphal East district, in the northeast Indian state of Manipur.[1] It is historically significant as the capital region of the ancient Luwang dynasty.[2]
History and name
[edit]The name Luwangsangbam is linked to the Luwang clan—one of the seven Yek Salai (clan groups) of the Meitei community. In ancient times, it served as the capital (“Kangla”) area of the Luwang dynasty during the early centuries CE, when the clan established one of the earliest small principalities in the Manipur valley.[2][3]
Geography
[edit]Luwangsangbam is located about 8 km north of Imphal city, within an area featuring gentle terrain and access to the Imphal River.[4] It is bordered by localities such as Nilakuthi, Heingang, and Kairang Khomidok.
Demographics
[edit]According to the 2011 Census, the population was 3,458, comprising 1,676 males and 1,782 females.[5] Children aged 0–6 numbered 396 (11.45 percent), with a child sex ratio of 886.[5] The female sex ratio stood at 1,063—higher than the state average of 985.[5] Literacy was 90.46 percent overall: male 97.07 percent, female 84.40 percent.[5] An estimated population for 2025 is around 4,800.[5]
Amenities and infrastructure
[edit]A local post office serves the town under PIN 795002.[6] The Luwangsangbam Community Hall, located on Liberal College Road, is used for events and festivals.[7]
Education
[edit]Liberal College, Luwangsangbam, was established in 1979. It began classes on 10 August 1979 at Srivan High School, before its permanent campus was built near NH‑2. Accredited to Manipur University, it offers undergraduate courses in Arts, Science, and Commerce, and has facilities including an indoor stadium and women's hostel.[8]
Community organisations
[edit]The Anita Chanu Weightlifting Academy Society, registered in 1993, promotes sports—especially weightlifting—for youth and women in Luwangsangbam.[9]

[edit]Luwangsangbam falls under the Heingang Assembly Constituency, which is part of Inner Manipur parliamentary seat.[10]
