Lu Renjie (born September 9, 1982) is a Chinese artist known for his works in oil painting, ceramics, and sculpture. His art has been collected by notable figures such as Jackie Chan, Li Ka-shing, and James Cameron.[1][dead link][2]
Career
[edit]Lu Renjie is an independent artist who began his career in advertising and magazine illustration, and taught at Shanghai Electronic Information Vocational and Technical College for five years.[2] His profile rose when Jackie Chan commissioned projects like the "Twelve Golden Hairpins" series.[3][1][2]
In middle school, Lu encountered the Classic of Mountains and Seas, an experience that sparked recurring dream images. In 2017, he revisited his childhood manuscripts to launch a systematic project aimed at developing a comprehensive Classic of Mountains and Seas system, which has since influenced his artistic direction.[4][5]
Works
[edit]- "山海世界" (Shanhai World): World of Shan Hai (World of Mountains and Seas) is a panoramic sand table installation of nearly a thousand sculptures that reinterprets the Classic of Mountains and Seas. Its elements—landscapes, minerals, flora, fauna, and mythical figures—mirror the ancient text. Serving as a foundation for future derivative works, the installation is rendered in ceramics, underscoring Chinese cultural heritage.[5][4][6]
- "山海图" (The Shanhai Scroll): An 8-meter-long, 2.2-meter-high scroll that presents two visual realms—a "surface world" depicting the visible landscape of the Classic of Mountains and Seas and an "inner world" revealed under special lighting to convey its symbolic depth.[5][6]
- "十二金钗" (Twelve Golden Hairpins): A ceramic series inspired by the classic novel Dream of the Red Chamber, this work has been collected by various celebrities.[4][1]
- "非遗中国" (Feiyi China), also known as "中国龙" (Chinese Dragon):[4] This monumental work measures 12.8 meters in length and 2.5 meters in height. Its central feature is a giant dragon modeled after the Yangtze River, with a background of satellite imagery divided into 1800 grids representing elements of China's intangible cultural heritage.[2][1]
Exhibitions
[edit]- In May 2025, Lu Renjie exhibited ShanHai-verse at “Fractured Horizons,” an international group exhibition held at PI Art Center’s New York and New Jersey campuses as part of the official NYCxDesign Festival program, featuring 72 artists from 9 countries exploring the convergence of cultural heritage and technological futures.[7]
- In 2023, Lu Renjie presented Secrets of the Classic of Mountains and Seas, a solo exhibition at Guangfulin Relics Park in Shanghai, featuring nearly 10,000 sculptures and immersive installations that brought to life the mythological world of the ancient Chinese text Shanhaijing.[8]
- In 2021, Lu Renjie presented his work ShanHai World as part of the "Light Chaser – Tribute to Every Breakthrough" annual exhibition organized by Baoku Culture at Shanghai Tower. His piece was featured in the "Light of Chaos" section, exploring the fusion of ancient mythology and contemporary digital aesthetics.[9]
