Lauren Bousfield is an electronic musician, composer, and sound designer based in Los Angeles. She initially gained recognition for her project Nero's Day at Disneyland, and since 2012 she has also been releasing music both under her own name and as part of the duos In-House Pharmacy and DOOR EATER, in addition to composing for television, film, and video games.[1]
Career and works
[edit]Bousfield had previously been a part of Hans Zimmer's Remote Control Productions as early as 2016[2] but in 2021 said that she was fired soon after she transitioned.[3]
In 2017, Bousfield released an EP called Fire Songs, which was made after the 2016 Ghost Ship warehouse fire and a house fire in her own home. The opening track No Clocks No Mirrors honors Joey Casio, a friend of Bousfield and fellow musician who died in the Ghost Ship fire,[4] while the closing track titled Cirlgocks marks her inaugural work with future frequent collaborator Naomi Mitchell.
On October 14, 2018, Bousfield and Mitchell released their first album as In-House Pharmacy. A rescored soundtrack to Tetsuo: The Iron Man paying tribute to both the film and Donna Haraway's Cyborg Manifesto, the album titled simply Tetsuo: The Iron Man Revisited explores transgender themes, both horrific and hopeful, through instrumentation in reference to the film's central motifs of bodily transformation.[5] This was followed by a second release under the In-House Pharmacy name in 2020, We Are Electronics and Piano Only,[6] in which Bousfield and Mitchell experiment with the limitations of only using a piano and a modular synthesizer to produce a full album of music, and a 2022 single named Stochastic Violence[7].
In 2021, Bousfield participated in the multimedia arts event Pique, presenting a piece inspired by Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade floats. She described the visuals, once again created in collaboration with Naomi Mitchell, as “floats popping or generally causing mayhem,” symbolizing fragility and collapse during the COVID-19 pandemic. Bousfield cited a fascination with North American amusement culture, such as parades and theme parks, and emphasized how her live performances often serve as a place to expand on musical ideas.[8]
In 2025, Bousfield and Ada Rook started DOOR EATER, which has released two singles so far. Their debut full-length album is due to release on June 25, 2025.
