Kirazlık is a village in the Ardeşen District, Rize Province, in the Black Sea Region of Turkey.[1] Its population is 118 (2021).[2]

History

[edit]

According to the List of villages in Laz language book (2009), the village's Laz name is Celaiskur. The name reflects the area's historical connection to the Laz people, an indigenous ethnic group of the Black Sea region.[3] Historical records suggest that Laz communities have inhabited the region for centuries, preserving their language and cultural traditions despite political and demographic changes over time.

Demographics

[edit]

Most of the villagers are ethnically Laz, and Lazuri (the Laz language) is still spoken by some residents, particularly among the older generation. Younger villagers increasingly use Turkish as their primary language, reflecting broader trends in the region.

Economy

[edit]

The village’s economy is primarily based on agriculture and animal husbandry. Tea cultivation, a dominant economic activity in Rize Province, plays a significant role in Kirazlık as well. Small-scale farming of hazelnuts and corn also contributes to household incomes.

Culture

[edit]

Kirazlık, like other Laz settlements, maintains aspects of Laz culture such as traditional music, dance, and cuisine. Festivities and weddings often feature the horon, a fast-paced group dance typical of the Black Sea coast.

Geography

[edit]

The village is situated at an elevation of 537 meters and is located 17 kilometres (11 mi) from the district center of Ardeşen. Its location in the rugged terrain of the Pontic Mountains gives it a humid subtropical climate with abundant rainfall throughout the year.
