Kacou Philippe
Kacou Philippe (Katadji, December 1972) is a self-proclaimed prophet from the Ivory Coast, believed to be the only divine prophet of all religions. His religious viewpoints have led to his detention in May 2016.
Biography
[edit]Early life
[edit]Kacou Philippe was born in December 1972 in Katadji, a location in the southern Ivory Coast, as the son of an illiterate farmer. After finishing primary school, he only finished the first four grades of elementary school. From 1993 to 2002, most of his life was spent working in the construction sector.[1]
Early involvement with religion
[edit]On the night of 24 April 1993, Kacou Philippe received a supernatural visit, which reportedly delivered messages that distorted the word of God, which became a part of Kacou's doctrine. However, he took this event as a message from God, and initially went to a Catholic priest before following William Branham's views. He remained a plain follower of his movement from 1993 to 2002.[1]
The ministry
[edit]Kacou Philippe started his public sermons in July 2002, after a second supposed visit from an angel, where he became the self-declared prophet of the "Midnight Cry", according to Matthew 25:6.[1] As of 2017, he has followers in numerous African and Latin American countries, while reportedly having several thousand adherents.[2]
Kacou Philippe initiated a tour of several African nations in 2025. He started with South Africa from March 5th to March 19. His entrance in Zimbabwe was scheduled for March but was delayed to April due to visa problems.[3]
Views
[edit]Kacou Philippe believes that society is living a new age, being its "prophet".[4] His teachings are published in The Book of Kacou Philippe, a three-volume book, where he claims that the Bible is a "history book" and that he is “the only prophet of God on earth during this generation".[2]
He is also known for his submission of black people in front of white people, which eventually led to his arrest.[5]
Controversies
[edit]Kacou Philippe is known for his hostilities with other pastors and prophets.[2]
On 22 June 2008, a confrontation erupted between Kacou Philippe and Zakpa Dadié Étienne in Yopougon. Dadié Zakpa said that there would be no other prophets other than him, which Kacou refused. According to his Branhamist views, another prophet would come to bring a new message, being limited to Kacou Philippe himself.[6]
Arrest
[edit]On 13 May 2016, Kacou Philippe was arrested by elements of the Ivorian General Intelligence Services at his home in Katadji, after repeatedly ignoring several police intimidations in previous weeks.[7] On 20 May, he was transferred to MACA (Mison d'arrêt et correction d'Abidjan).[8] Under the grounds of inciting religious intolerance and hate speech, he was jailed for one year after a trial on 3 June.[9] On 15 August 2016, Kacou Philippe was freed, but deprived from his basic rights and is banned from preaching in the Ivory Coast.[10]
