July Uprising Day (Bengali: জুলাই গণ-অভ্যুত্থান দিবস) is a national day in that will be celebrated on 5 August every year from 2025.
On 1 July 2024, the non-partisan student platform Students Against Discrimination launched a nationwide quota reform movement. During the course of the protests, violent crackdowns on demonstrators led to a call for a non-cooperation movement demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who led the Awami League government at the time. As part of a two-day long march toward the capital Dhaka, people began arriving from across the country on 5 August 2024. Under growing pressure, Sheikh Hasina resigned from the office of Prime Minister and left for India with her sister Sheikh Rehana, ending her party's 15-year rule.[1]
Considering the ongoing situation, the Ministry of Public Administration declared a general holiday from 5 to 7 August.[2] On 9 August 2024, Bangladesh Chatropokkho announced 5 August as the “Second Republic Day” at a press conference held at its central office.[3]
On 20 August 2024, Tarique Rahman, acting chairman of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), called for the day to be observed as a national holiday.[4]
On 16 October 2024, Nahid Islam, advisor to the Ministry of Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology and Ministry of Information and Broadcasting in the interim government, stated that 5 August would likely be added to the list of national holidays in connection with the student-people uprising, and that discussions were ongoing within the government.[5]
The next day, a source in the Cabinet Division reported that the day was likely to be declared a public holiday, and a name would be finalized at a Cabinet meeting.[6]
The proposal to form the Department of the July Uprising under the Ministry of Liberation War Affairs included the observance of the day and was approved by the Secretary Committee on Administrative Development in a meeting on 6 January 2025. The proposal was then submitted to the Cabinet Division for final approval.[7] On 28 April 2025, the formation of the department was officially announced.[8] On 19 June 2025, the Cultural Affairs Adviser Mostofa Sarwar Farooki confirmed that a public holiday would be granted on this date every year starting from 2025.[9]
