Johannes van der Struijf[a] (3 October 1865 – 29 December 1933) was a Dutch naval engineer who served as chief engineer of the Royal Netherlands Navy (RNLN).[6][7] He is best known for being responsible for the first indigenous Dutch submarine designs of the RNLN.[3][8] Between 1921 until his retirement on 1 January 1931 he designed a total of 15 Dutch submarines, of which seven were O type boats and eight were K type boats.[3][9][4]
Early life
[edit]Johannes van der Struijf was born on 3 October 1865 in Hof van Delft, Netherlands.[6]
History
[edit]In August 1914 Van der Struijf was promoted to chief engineer of the Royal Netherlands Navy.[10]
Starting with the O 9 class submarine and K XI class submarine Van der Struijf was responsible for the design of 15 Dutch submarines between 1921 and 1931.[3][9][11] His submarine designs showed successive improvements and incorporated several changes compared to the earlier foreign designed submarines of the Royal Netherlands Navy.[12][13] However, some of his submarine designs did show a few aspects that were clearly inspired by German submarine designs.[5]
In June 1932 he was appointed officer in the Order of Orange-Nassau.[10][14]
Personal life
[edit]He died on 29 December 1933 at the age of 68 at the Bronovo hospital in the Hague.[1] He was buried on 1 January 1934 at Nieuw Eykenduynen .[15][16]
