Jalan Kayu is a Single Member Constituency (SMC) for the Parliament of Singapore. Located in the North-East Region, it was established in 2025 after being split from Ang Mo Kio GRC and was first contested at the general election that occurred in the same year. The current Member of Parliament is Ng Chee Meng from the People's Action Party (PAP).

History

[edit]

Jalan Kayu SMC was established for the 2025 general election, in order to reduce the number of voters in Ang Mo Kio Group Representation Constituency (GRC), which had the most electors out of all GRCs. At re-establishment, Jalan Kayu SMC had 29,565 registered voters.[1][2]

2025 election

[edit]

The constituency saw the political comeback of Ng Chee Meng from the People's Action Party (PAP), who was previously a Member of Parliament (MP) from 2015 to 2020 and a cabinet minister at the now defunct Pasir Ris–Punggol GRC's Punggol North division. He and his team was defeated by the Workers' Party (WP) at the then newly created Sengkang GRC during the 2020 general election, leading to a five-year period where he was not an MP while remaining Secretary-General of the PAP-affliated National Trades Union Congress (NTUC), a position he has held since 2018. Contesting in Jalan Kayu, he managed to narrowly defeat newcomer Andre Low from the WP with 51.47% of the votes to 48.73%, a margin of just 806 votes, which was the narrowest PAP victory in the election.[3][4]
