Jagdeo Singh MP (born 20 January 1966) is a Trinidadian attorney and public official, currently serving as the 10th Speaker of the House of Trinidad and Tobago. A distinguished legal luminary with over three decades of experience, Singh has held several official roles, including serving as legal counsel in national commissions of enquiry in the investigation into Trinidad’s 1990 coup attempt and also as a member of the Law Reform Commission of Trinidad and Tobago from 2011 to 2017.[1][2]
Career

[edit]Singh earned his Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) from the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill in 1987 and completed his legal training at the Hugh Wooding Law School, being called to the bar in 1989. He became Head of Chambers and Lead Counsel at Fortis Chambers, where he led in criminal appeals, constitutional motions, and civil litigation for nearly two decades.[3]
He has practiced before a wide range of judicial and quasi-judicial bodies, including the:
- Tax Appeal Board
- Industrial Court
- Family Court
- Equal Opportunity Tribunal
- Environmental Commission
- Mediation Boards and Public Service Appeals
Public service
[edit]From 2011 to 2017, Singh was a member of the Law Reform Commission of Trinidad and Tobago, contributing to policy reform and legislative modernization.[4]
He also served as legal counsel in several major public commissions of enquiry, including:
- The 1990 attempted coup enquiry
- The CLICO financial collapse commission
- The Las Alturas Towers construction enquiry
His role involved cross-examining witnesses, reviewing state documents, and making submissions on behalf of the State and public interest.
Speaker of the House
[edit]On May 23, 2025, Singh was elected unopposed as the 10th Speaker of the House of Representatives of Trinidad and Tobago during the ceremonial opening of the 13th Republican Parliament.[5]
Though nominated by the United National Congress, Singh assumed a non-partisan stance upon his election, in line with the traditions and constitutional responsibilities of the Speaker's office.
