Jack T. Chance is from the planet Garnet, also known as 'Hellhole' because it is one of the worst criminal worlds in existence. He is chosen by the ring of deceased Lantern Pathavim Seth-Ottarak and becomes a Green Lantern. However, he rejects the idea of a uniform, refusing to wear anything other than his own clothes with a badge added.

Chance hunts down the man who killed Pathavim, intending to kill him, but learns that his ring has a failsafe against lethal force and instead uses a normal firearm to kill him. In response, the Guardians of the Universe force Chance to undergo training and a probation period before he can continue serving in the Corps.[1][2][3]

In the fourth volume of Green Lantern, Chance is sent to Qward to rescue Hal Jordan, during which he is killed by Parallax.[4] Chance has remained dead since, but was temporarily resurrected as a Black Lantern in Blackest Night.[5]
