island.is is the official central digital gateway for public services in Iceland. Launched in its current form in autumn 2020, the portal is operated under the initiative "Digital Iceland" (Icelandic: Stafrænt Ísland), overseen by the Ministry of Finance and Economic Affairs. The initiative was launched following a cabinet decision by the government of Iceland in May 2018, with the goal of modernising public services and enhancing digital access through a unified platform.[1][2] The domain island.is was first registered with ISNIC 7 February 2002 and has been used by the Icelandic government for different purposes ever since.
