Ichikawa Udanji I (初代 市川 右團次, 1843–1916) was a Japanese kabuki actor.[1]
Biography
[edit]Ichikawa was born in Osaka. His father was Ichikawa Kodanji IV . In 1852, he appeared on stage in Osaka for the first time as Ichikawa Fukutarō I (初代目 市川 福太郎).
In 1862, Fukutarō and his mother moved to Edo in order to join his father Kodanji IV. Immediately his parents began to quarrel and separated. Fukutarō then returned to Osaka with his mother. Later that year, Fukutarō took the name Ichikawa Udanji I.[2]
Ichikawa was known for his fondness for keren (外連) stagecraft tricks.[1] He also performed in a number of zangirimono plays aimed at promoting "civilized" Western values. In 1881, he founded the Udanji Troupe (右團次一座, Udanji ichiza) and went on tour in Toyohashi.[2]
In 1909, Ichikawa transferred the Udanji name to his son Ichikawa Udanji II and took the name Ichikawa Sai'nyū (市川 齊入) in retirement. He died in 1916.[2]
