Ibrahim Sjarief Assegaf (8 April 1971 – 20 May 2025) was an Indonesian lawyer, lecturer and activist. He is known as the co-founder of Hukumonline, a platform for enhancing social law literacy, and as a commissioner of Narasi, a journalism and media company that was founded by his wife, Najwa Shihab. Assegaf also served as managing partner at Assegaf Hamzah & Partners.

Early life

Assegaf was born on 8 April 1971 in Semarang, Central Java, as the eldest child and son of Husein Ibrahim Assegaf and Rugaya Basri.[1][2] He had a brother, Rifqi Sjarief Assegaf.[3] Assegaf went to Faculty of Law at University of Indonesia and earned his master degree from University of Melbourne in 2009.[2] He was a visiting research fellow at the East Asian law studies program at Harvard Law School from 2002 until 2003.[4][2]

Career

Assegaf started his career as a managing partner at the law firm Assegaf Hamzah & Partners in 2009, and became known for his expertise in banking and finance, business and forestry restructuring, and infrastructure development.[2] Assegaf along with his colleagues founded PT. Justika Siar Publika, known as Hukumonline, a media platform for collecting industry legal information and regulations and founded Yayasan Studi Hukum dan Kebijakan Indonesia.[4][2] He contributed to modernizing the online availability of legal regulations, documents and legal information, and became managing partner at the law firm.[1] He was a legal advisor to private and state-owned large enterprises, and in national strategic projects such as Palapa Ring, and received international recognition. Assegaf also received an award from Chambers and Partners Asia Pacific as “Band 3 in Banking and Finance” in 2017 and 2018. In 2016 – 2018, Legal500 Asia Pacific and IFLR1000 named him as "Highly Regarded" and "Leading Lawyer" in several legal fields.[4] He was the main commissioner of Narasi.[2]

Personal life and death

Assegaf was married to Najwa Shihab, a journalist, and had two children, including Izzat Ibrahim Assegaf (born 2001).[2] Their marriage lasted until his death in May 2025.[3][2]

Assegaf died after being treated for a few days at a Jakarta hospital, on 20 May 2025, at the age of 54. He was buried at Jeruk Purut Cemetery on 21 May.[1]
