Heingang is a census town located in the Porompat subdivision of Imphal East district, in the northeastern Indian state of Manipur. It is recognized for its cultural and religious significance within the Meitei religion as well as its association with traditional sports such as Sagol Kangjei (polo).[1][2]

Administration and politics
[edit]Heingang is part of the Heingang Assembly constituency (Constituency No. 2) and falls under the Inner Manipur Lok Sabha constituency.[9]
Culture and landmarks
[edit]- Heingang Ching (Marjing Hill): A sacred site associated with Ibudhou Marjing, the Meitei deity of polo and horses.
- Marjing Polo Complex: Home to the world’s largest equestrian polo statue.[10]
- Ibudhou Marjing Lai Haraopham: A shrine and cultural museum dedicated to the deity.[11]
- Lai Haraoba Festival: A traditional annual religious and cultural celebration held in honor of local deities.
Geography
[edit]Heingang lies approximately 4 km northeast of Imphal and is surrounded by hills, paddy fields, and forested regions. The Heingang Reserved Forest serves as a designated conservation area.[12]
Economy
[edit]The local economy is primarily agrarian, with a focus on rice cultivation. Additionally, the area is known for traditional handicrafts, including the making of polo saddles and gear.[13][14]
Transport
[edit]Heingang is well connected by local roads and lies approximately 6 km from Imphal via the Imphal Ring Road project.[15] State-run and private buses, auto-rickshaws, and taxis operate in the area. The nearest airport is Bir Tikendrajit International Airport, about 10 km away.[16]
Environmental issues
[edit]Several local reports have noted unregulated encroachment on paddy fields and wetlands due to illegal construction activities in the area.[17]
