Head North: A Rallying Cry for a More Equal Britain is a non-fiction book by the Mayor of Greater Manchester Andy Burnham and the Mayor of the Liverpool City Region Steve Rotheram. It was published on 7 March 2024 by the Hachette imprint, Trapeze.[1]
Content
[edit]Head North describes itself as "half-memoir, half-manifesto".[2]
The book draws on the Hillsborough disaster as a defining moment in both Rotheram's and Burnham's journeys in politics.[3] Head North is very critical of the effects of neoliberalism, specifically deregulation and privatisation, on their areas.[4]
Reception
[edit]The book received mixed reviews from critics.
A review in The Guardian described Head North as a "manifesto for hope".[1] A review in the New Statesman was critical, describing the book as peddling a "tired northern exceptionalism".[5]
